Discover with us the interiors of the Pantheon and its Undergrounds!
The Secret Pantheon Tour offers a fascinating journey through history that begins in the mysterious Devil’s Moat. In this space suspended between myth and archaeology, ancient structures resurface seven meters below street level. Simply step away from the famous—and constantly crowded—portico overlooking Piazza della Rotonda and walk down the alley to the right of the building to slowly descend into an underground universe.
Above, Rome continues its incessant bustle, while a heavy bronze door opens, revealing a journey full of surprises: almost unknown spaces, reopened to the public after a lengthy restoration and enhancement project.
We thus find ourselves before the imposing rooms of the Basilica of Neptune, whose origins date back to the final phase of the Republican era (1st century BC). It is an absolute masterpiece of architecture and decoration: enormous marble slabs make up the floor, massive walls rise up to sixteen meters, while arches and vaults alternate with sculpted friezes featuring dolphins moving around the god’s tridents and marine motifs. A heritage hidden for centuries in the bowels of the Pantheon.
Today, this extraordinary complex is finally open to visitors, and you can discover it with us!
After crossing the ancient gate, the tour begins in the Chapel of Santa Maria ad Martyres, which houses an icon of the Virgin and Child: one of the three oldest in Rome, fragile and intense, directly linked to the consecration of 609.
The charm of the tour grows in the continuous dialogue between the curved walls of the Pantheon and the linear ones of the Basilica of Neptune, until it climbs along the walls and reaches the attic of the basilica: a place that becomes a museum in itself.
To begin this journey through time, you’ll meet your guide in front of the Temple of Hadrian, not far from the Pantheon. With your guide and the rest of the group, you’ll reach the Pantheon, one of Rome’s oldest and best-preserved temples, where you’ll understand the true meaning of the Eternal City!
You and the rest of the group will first take a guided tour of the Basilica of Neptune, in the Pantheon’s underground chambers, accompanied by an in-house guide. After visiting the secret underground chambers, you’ll continue the tour with your guide, who will accompany you and the rest of the group to discover the magnificence of the Pantheon, visiting its interior, the grandiose oculus, and the magnificent external portico.
The Tour will end in the square admiring the central fountain surmounted by an Egyptian obelisk of extraordinary beauty!
